Mentor Support Worker needed
Created By
Asylum Seeker Resource CentreDescription
The ASRC is the largest provider of aid, advocacy and health services for asylum seekers and refugees in Australia. Our team of 700 volunteers work directly with asylum seekers (over 3000) both living in our community and in detention, to provide direct aid and support as they seek refugee status in Australia. The ASRC Mentor program develops and maintains long-term relationships through matching Mentor volunteers with asylum seekers for regular one-on-one social contact and mentoring in order to combat loneliness, social isolation, depression and improve and encourage independent relationships and connectedness in asylum seekers.
We are currently looking for people who can support both our mentors and our mentees. This includes fortnightly phone calls to your mentors and mentees to check on their progress and to provide a liaison between the volunteers and the ASRC. It also includes organising monthly gatherings for the mentoring group, assessing new clients and helping to deliver training to new volunteers.
This role is highly autonomous and the ideal candidate will be highly organised, hold exceptional communicational skills, be confident training a group and be able to have constructive and often difficult performance discussions. You will need to be able to commit to volunteering one day a week for a minimum of twelve months.
You will be rewarded by seeing volunteers and asylum seekers grow and develop relationships, and working in a highly motivated and well-functioning team.
Applications close at 5pm on Monday 6 February.
No one chooses to be an asylum seeker – but you can choose to help
