Brain Injury Association of NSW Inc

Description

BIA NSW is the peak advocacy body for people affected by Acquired Brain Injury in NSW.

Acquired brain injury is any injury to the brain after birth, and includes traumatic injuries (eg. from motor accidents, falls, and assaults) and damage to the brain following strokes, infections, brain tumours, and other conditions. An acquired brain injury can happen to anyone.

Our membership includes people with an acquired brain injury, carers and family members, and organisations working to support them.

Our core business is systemic advocacy, and we represent the needs of people affected by acquired brain injury to government and policy-makers. We also undertake individual advocacy, helping people with an acquired brain injury with a range of legal and service access problems.

We run an information and referral line (1800 802 840), which takes about 800 calls per year.

We also focus on awareness-raising, education and training, and run a speakers bureau of people with an acquired brain injury who present their story to a range of audiences, including community groups and school students.
