Concern Australia - Steps Outreach Service

Description

Steps Outreach Service is a program of Concern Australia. We are called ‘Steps’ because our team of workers and volunteers meet on the steps at Flinders Street Station at night time to engage with young homeless people. We provide long-term relational and practical support to young people to help them connect back into mainstream society, thereby creating positive pathways out of homelessness. This involves giving material aid, referrals to appropriate services and advocacy with welfare agencies, at court and with housing services.

We support young people with issues such as drug and alcohol abuse problems, mental health issues, domestic violence, criminal offending and loss of housing. Once the young people have accessed housing, we continue to support them for as long as they would like us to. We aim to be a ‘significant other’ in their lives that they can trust and rely on. With this long-term support, we have seen many success stories and positive changes in people’s lives since we were established in 1985.
