Emergency Architects Australia

Description

Emergency Architects Australia (EAA) is a not for profit professional organisation affiliated with partner organisations in France and Canada. Established in 2005, we provide architectural advice, planning, project management and building support in South East Asia and the Pacific Region to communities;
- Who have suffered natural disasters or the effects of conflict and
- Who are seeking to reduce avoidable damage from foreseeable extreme events.

Some of the significant work we have achieved over the past five years includes;
-Design of a temporary village and new community hall for communities impacted by the Victorian bushfires
-The design and construction of 160 houses in Aceh partnering with Australian Red Cross
-Run shelter courses in the Solomon Islands teaching people how to brace their houses
-Designed and built school buildings and teachers’ housing in the Solomon Islands.

Committed volunteers enable us to provide our high level professional services at a minimal cost. We make the aid go further through:
-Involving communities in the design process
-Using local techniques and materials
-Promoting local involvement in construction management
-Environmentally responsible and sustainable projects
As a result, the communities have real ownership of their new buildings and are dedicated to maintaining them.

In 2010 we are working in Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and the Cook Islands providing advice and design services on a variety of projects addressing impacts of climate change, natural disasters and war.

We partner with organisations such as The European Union, UNHCR, UNICEF, NZAID, Australian Red Cross, World Vision, and Caritas essentially acting as consultants to these organisations. Important supporters include -The Union of International Architects, The Australian Institute of Architects and the Council of the City of Sydney.
