North Melbourne Legal Service Inc.
Description
North Melbourne Legal Service is a non-profit community legal centre with charitable status. Since its establishment in 1979, the Service has been operated, managed and supported by hundreds of volunteers who give up their time to assist the community which we serve.North Melbourne Legal Service provides services to clients who live, study or work in North & West Melbourne, the Central Business District, Carlton and Parkville.
Funding is received from the Commonwealth Government and the State Government through Victoria Legal Aid.
The Service has a small number of salaried staff; however, our service delivery relies largely on the dedication and generosity of volunteer students, solicitors, barristers and other volunteers.
North Melbourne Legal Service currently has over 40 active volunteers coming into the centre weekly, fortnightly or monthly. It is with this assistance that we are able to assist an average of 1000 clients each year with legal advice, representatation and information.
The North Melbourne Legal Service is assisted by law student volunteers who work at the Service during the daytime; legal practitioners who volunteer at our Tuesday evening and Friday afternoon drop-in clinics, and volunteers who contribute to the administration of the Service.
The Service has an ongoing secondment arrangement with the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office, and Freehills, as well as as case referral arrangements with DLA Phillips Fox.
