Description

Openaid is an Australian grassroots initiative working with women and girls in communities across Thailand, Burma and its borders with Laos who - because of various social problems such as poverty and gender inequality - are vulnerable to exploitation. Openaid seeks to act as an agent for real change by cultivating dialogue with communities and helping these communities to create opportunities for education and economic growth. These opportunities serve to empower the most vulnerable members within the community and promote a culture of long-term social transformation based on solutions which are sustainable. Projects bring communities together and create a culture of dialogue and learning, addressing in particular the issue of gender discrimination which acts as an obstacle to girls receiving an education. In order to develop solutions that effectively combat the exploitation of women and girls in situations of vulnerability, it is essential that these solutions arise from a relationship of trust with village-based schools and families in these communities.
