Platform Youth Theatre Inc

Description

Platform Youth Theatre strives to create innovative and original theatre of high calibre by people aged 16 to 26 via a physically and emotionally empowering process.Platform Youth Theatre is an innovative youth arts company based in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne. Born from a local government project initiated in 1998 it has quickly grown into leader in the youth arts sector, admired for its innovative approach to working with young people, as well as the quality of the work the company produces. Platform provides an important opportunity for young people to voice their concerns, hopes and fears through a creative context, and to gain skills in theatre making, performance and team work.
The company has a focus on creating original theatrical works, rather than performing pre existing scripts. The company fosters young voices and the telling of diverse and original Australian stories from young people’s perspectives by exploring themes that young people feel passionate about.

Platform maintains an open access policy via low or free cost activities for participants and via support for youth at risk and participants with disabilities.

The core business of the company is a combination of performances created in partnership between well respected artists and young people as well as supporting young people to develop and present their own work. The annual artistic program takes shape in the form of mentoring, workshops and a major annual production

Young people are at the core of what the company does
Platform fosters youth governance and leadership via its unique board structure and the training of young people in essential governance and leadership skills- the pairing of these young people with more experienced board members allows for a relevant directional focus for the company and one whose roots are imbedded in the community it serves.
