The Alola Foundation

Description

Fundasaun Alola was originally created to raise awareness of the widespread sexual violence against women and girls in Timor-Leste during the militia attacks of September 1999. Today, Fundasaun Alola have developed significant programs in education, maternal and child health, economic development as well as advocacy for the women and children of Timor-Leste.

Working with community groups and individuals, its programs aim to improve maternal and child health, create employment, promote human rights, strengthen community development, and improve the status of women. Now employing over 100 staff, Alola is committed to developing strong women who will be the leaders of the future in Timor-Leste.

Alola Australia was established in 2008 by a group of Alola volunteers in Victoria to give Fundasaun Alola a national presence in Australia and to make its ongoing fundraising activities more accountable. It is a volunteer run organisation and each Board member is actively involved in all its fundraising activities.

Alola Australia's objectives are:

*To raise awareness throughout Australia of the need to support development programs in Timor-Leste for the benefit of women and children through support for Fundasaun Alola; and

*To raise funds for Fundasaun Alola to ensure the sustainability of its development programs.
