Victorian AIDS Council
Description
The Victorian AIDS Council was founded in 1983 and aims to improve the health, social and emotional wellbeing of HIV positive Victorians. Approximately 300 volunteers and 40 paid staff work in the areas of Services for People Living with HIV/AIDS, Health Promotion, Counselling, Fundraising and Administration.Our Vision
The VAC/GMHC aims to improve the health and social and emotional well-being of the Victorian HIV positive and Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender communities. In particular, we are invested in bring the AIDS epidemic to an end.
WHO
The groups we serve are:
HIV positive individuals and communities;
HIV vulnerable or at risk communities; and,
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) communities.
HOW
As a community based public health organisation, VAC/GMHC will:
Empower individuals and communities to manage their own health;
Be responsive to the changing needs of our communities;
Build supportive environments for individuals to adopt and sustain healthy behaviours; and,
Build the capacity of the broader community, including government and service providers to respond to the needs of our communities.
WHAT
Our core services include:
Building the capacity of HIV vulnerable/at risk communities and individuals through preventative health strategies such as education, training and support;
Care, support and advocacy for HIV positive individuals and communities; and,
Advocating for social justice for the GLBTI community and improving their experience of the health service system.
