Tips for working with community groups

Part of our feedback and reporting process involves asking community groups what tips they have for volunteers, and vice versa.

Here is some of the advice we have received from community groups- and it seems to come down to flexibility, clear communication and good feedback!

"Every Not-For-Profit organisation endeavours to make sure their volunteers are having a fun and satisfying experience; however, quite often there is a queue of crises to be managed. Helpful volunteers are rarely the most pressing problem. If you are feeling that you are losing energy or interest for your volunteer role let the organisation know. Not-For-Profits inevitably want to retain helpful volunteers for as long as possible, and so just because your current role has become stale doesn’t mean there isn’t something else you could be doing that might be more satisfying."

"I have found it important to check out how serious is the volunteer about taking on a role that is integral to the health and future of the organisation. Some aspiring volunteers decided not to start their relationship with us, following a robust initial conversation!"

  • Engage in a project you are interested in and will enjoy
  • Be honest on your capacity to deliver, on your strengths and weaknesses
  • Seek recognition for your professional or personal CV – your work should not go unrewarded!
