Glenn Hester, Photographer for Reclink

My occupation:
Commercial Photographer
My responsibilities:
Commercial photographer servicing clients that include Ad Agencies, Architects, Construction Companies, Corporate Entities, Designers & Property Developers.
What inspired me to get involved in skilled volunteering:
I had been thinking about volunteering for a while to expand my working conditions a little. You know, meet people that were outside my circle of clients. Being a photographer working for yourself can be isolating sometimes! When the email came through from goodcompany saying Reclink needed a photographer – I jumped at the opportunity. It was a good match since I love sport as much as I do photography – but I rarely combine the two.

Tell us about Reclink:
Reclink uses The Arts, sport & social activities to help people experiencing disadvantage. Reclink targets some of the communities most vulnerable and isolated people – those who experience mental illness, disability, homelessness, substance abuse issues, addictions, and social and economic hardship.
A bit about the wishes I fulfilled, what I achieved and their outcomes: The first event I photographed was a soccer Grand Final day. As well as documenting the day, team photos & presentations, the action on the field was also covered. It was the action shots that got the best response from Reclink. Since then, I have covered Charity lunches, a Paddle event at Sorrento & Aussie rules Grand Final Days. The photos are used in Reclink press releases & website.

What the community group gained:
Reclink now have a constantly updated collection of professional images of their events. The images not only document the event, but also capture the personalities of the people involved.
What I got out of volunteering my time and skills:
As soon as I arrived, I immediately felt welcome and a part of the Reclink team. I got an instant look into participant’s lives, who have fallen on hard times - & how they have overcome them. I have met some truly inspirational people who, regardless of what life throws at them, they keep going. The willingness of the participants to be photographed showed me the sense of pride and fulfillment they get out of being involved in the Reclink event.
Tips for Community Groups and volunteers working together:
I would say to potential volunteers to choose a Community Group that challenges you and takes you out of your comfort zone. My experience with Reclink was made so easy by the organization of my contact, Susannah. Heaps of notice, reminders & a detailed brief/running sheet of the event made the job a breeze – as well as coffee vouchers on cold, wet & windy afternoons.
