Jamie Moore, Joondalup Youth Support Services

1. Name: Jamie Moore

2. My occupation: Psychologist

3. My responsibilities:

Organisational Development Manager at Joondalup Youth Support Services – responsible for partnership development, program development and building the resources and capacity of the organisation to deliver services to at-risk youth

Researcher at Edith Cowan University (School of Psychology & Social Science) – work on the ADRA project sponsored by AusAid and the Life Span Resilience Group

I also run my own small business (Moore Stat Consulting) where I provide statistics consulting to PhD, Masters and Undergraduate psychology students and also businesses to some level.

4. What inspired me to get involved in skilled volunteering:

My work in the not-for-profit (NFP) sector has made me realise the significant contribution that skilled volunteering can make to an organisation. This type of volunteering allows NFP organisations to redirect resources and funding to other areas that allow them to achieve their mission and vision. In regards to the current volunteer project I have a strong interest in basketball and sports and was very keen to assist an organisation such as Wheelchair Sports WA (WSWA) as I am interested in the area they work in.

5. A bit about the volunteer projects I fulfilled, what I achieved and their outcomes:

I designed and facilitated a member survey for WSWA to help them assess the current satisfaction of their members and what services they would like to see in the future. I provided WSWA with the results of this survey and will compile a final report that they can use to leverage further funding and member satisfaction.

6. What the community group gained:

It allowed them to complete their first survey of a significant sample of their members. With the final report, a list of key findings will be compiled which WSWA can hopefully use to benefit themselves and their members into the future.

7. What I got out of volunteering my time and skills:

I developed a strong relationship with WSWA staff and learnt a lot more about what services they provide to the community. It also allowed me to further refine my professional skills in line with the needs of a NFP organisation.

8. Tips for Community Groups and volunteers working together:

Be very clear about the outcomes required from the “volunteer project” and how many hours each party can put towards its completion. Both parties need to be flexible, as far as possible, to allow the “volunteer project” to be completed to its highest potential taking into account the other responsibilities both the volunteer and NFP have in their roles.
