Melinda Valbusa, Mad Design

My occupation: Company Representative

My responsibilities: I look after our existing clients and their projects – taking initial briefs from clients, briefing senior designer and director, project manage each job through to final print and delivery. I also play a part in developing new business prospectives.

What inspired me to get involved in skilled volunteering: Without Skilled Volunteers our Community Groups would struggle to meet the needs and services of their patients/clients/community. I realized that donating my time and skills was just as effective and valued as donating money. I wanted to be able to make a small difference when and where I could.

Which organisations have I fulfilled volunteer projects for: I have fulfilled a number of projects with CanAssist – an organization that provides accommodation, travel, and financial assistance to rural families struck by cancer and who need accommodation in Sydney during treatment.

Example of a fulfilled volunteer project with a good outcome: CanAssist had a need for 40 brochures – one that each of their branches could have – we designed a generic brochure with the back panel being blank – each branch would then have the blank panel overprinted with their speific details/services for that community. Producing the project this way made it viable and economical.

What the community group gained: Effective marketing material that communicated clearly the services of Can Assist and its branches in a professional way.

What I got out of volunteering my time and skills: Satisfaction, knowing you have done something good to help others – simple !

The main difference between the NFP and private sectors: The difference is quite clear, people that work in NFP do it for the satisfaction of making a difference in the community and expect nothing in return. They are passionate and dedicated about raising awareness and raising the profile of their specific charity/community group.
