Fitzroy Legal Service

Description

Fitzroy Legal Service is one of the oldest community legal centres in Australia, opening in 1972. Fitzroy Legal Service provides casework to clients in our catchment area and plays a significant role in the areas of law reform and community legal education, which is closely bound up with the practice of preventative law, demystification of the law, self-help and empowerment. In addition to its daytime Service, Fitzroy Legal Service operates a free evening legal advice service five evenings a week, a free specialist PERIN fines clinic one night a week and a free specialist family law service one night a week. The Fitzroy Legal Service also provides a free legal emergency telephone advice service 7 days a week 24 hours a day for young people (Alphaline). The telephone advice were Alphaline (the emergency service for young people in trouble with the police) and to workers in local services.
The Service gives advice and where appropriate representation in a wide range of legal issues including criminal matters, family law, motor vehicle accidents, consumer problems, debts, housing, employment, wills, immigration, social security payments, and complaints against police and solicitors. The Service also has a long history of running public interest cases. For example, we currently have cases regarding abuse of powers by public transport officers.
