Liminal Lines

Description

Liminal Lines Inc. is an arts based organisation that works with young people in the juvenile justice system and young people at risk in the community. Our vision is: Personal discovery through creative arts.

We provide artistic and educational opportunities that create a connection between marginalised young people and the community and offer unique and exciting performance opportunities which build skills, confidence and self esteem. Through the utilisation of drama, dance, song writing/singing, story telling and visual arts young people develop performances that explore their life experiences and personal narratives. We prefer to use trained/experienced artists with personal histories of drug use, imprisonment or issues closely related to the target group.

Liminal Lines is a non-profit organisation which became incorporated in 2004 and established as a public benevolent institution in 2006. The core business of this group of highly trained and appropriately skilled artists, is utilising the arts with young women in and leaving custody or at risk of entering the juvenile justice system. Although working with largely creative, rather than therapeutic modelling, the program offers an alternative form of engagement to one on one counselling that is appropriate for the age group. In the last two years the company has also run programs with young men in custody (2004), young people in disadvantaged schools (2004), young people on justice and protective orders in the community (southern region, 2005), young women who are survivors of sexual assault (ECASA, 2004/05) and continued art-work on an outreach basis in regional/remote Victoria with Indigenous young women post-release (2005/2006).

The work in the custodial system with young women has been so successful and important to the centre and the young women, that in 2005 a strategic partnership was set up between the Department of Human Services Juvenile Justice, youth support agency Whitelion Inc and VicHealth. The University of Melbourne has continued to offer in kind support with rehearsal space for the post release group.
