Waverley Action for Youth Services

Description

The organisation was founded in 1979 as Waverley Action for Youth Services by a group of concerned citizens and was originally a small service offered from a terrace house in Bondi Junction.

In 1992 WAYS moved to a purpose built facility at Bondi Beach. This building remains the head office of the organization and the site for the Youth Centre and POEM-the education programme. With community support the service has grown to become one of the largest community based youth organisations in the state, now now proudly supporting offices located in Redfern, Maroubra, Bondi Junction and Double Bay. Offering the following suite of programmes available to the community:
• Adolescent and family counselling , parent education groups
• A specialist youth employment agency - assisting young people and employers with vacancies, traineeships and apprenticeships, job search training skills and a personal support programme for those young people who experience multiple barriers to gaining employment.
• Specialist Case Management Services for young people involved with the Juvenile Justice system.
• A wide range of recreation and creative programmes
• A range of Workshops that compliment the PDHPE curriculum in secondary schools offered through the Eastern Suburbs. These workshops focus on issues pertinent to young people today – alcohol and other drug use; sex, sexuality and relationships, bullying, developing resilience to name but a few.
• POEM an education programme that caters to young people disconnected from the mainstream school system.
• A free and confidential sexual health clinic to address the rising incidence of sexual health issues for young people under the age of 25 years.
• Peer Education programmes run throughout the summer months to educate young people about sexual health and drug and alcohol issues to promote reduction in risk taking behaviours.
• Urban Arts Base a creative programme for young people recovering from mental illness. The project runs in collaboration with the Prince of Wales Hospital mental health services
