IT Training for Refugees
Scott Evans has worked in IT support and development for a number of years. He decided to become involved with goodcompany to help others and to build on his own business and communication skills.
He responded to a wish from the Brotherhood of St Lawrence to build a new membership database.
As it happened, this wish had already been fulfilled, but Scott managed to find another way to donate his services. By contacting the organisation, he discovered that there was a group of refugees being assisted by the Brotherhood who were seeking job skills training through the BSL project, Given The Chance Refugee Employment.
Using his own experience, Scott began providing training in IT services with a long-term employment focus. He encouraged the trainees to obtain the skill to not only complete but also manage projects. He also arranged for some of his new trainees to gain work experience by managing and completing projects for non-profits such as Wildlife Victoria (WV). WV recently hosted a trainee for a three-week work experience period. Over 140 refugees have or are being assisted by the Given The Chance Refugee Employment project and 70 have found work through it.
As an active goodcompany member, Scott has managed to expand on his own skills. In addition, he’s experienced a sense of personal satisfaction from helping others gain job skills and independence.
