Advance Care Planning Australia Volunteer Community Ambassador

Join our volunteer team!
Are you a confident communicator? Do you enjoying connecting with people? Are you passionate about healthy ageing and empowering people to make healthcare choices that align with their values?

If this sounds like you, please join us at one of our volunteer information sessions to find out if becoming an Advance Care Planning Australia (ACPA) volunteer community ambassador is right for you.

ACPA is a national health program, based at Austin Health and funded by the Australian Government. Our volunteer team includes people from a diverse range of backgrounds including health care, law, education and the corporate sector. What they have in common is a passion for health, community and living well.

What is advance care planning?
With a rapidly ageing Australian population, advance care planning is becoming a more critical health priority.  It prepares people and their loved ones for important healthcare decisions they might face in the future. While it’s available to any adult, advance care planning becomes increasingly important for people as they get older or face serious or complex chronic illness.

What do our volunteers do?
Our volunteers may volunteer from home, helping us operate our national advisory service for up to four hours per week during business hours. Our volunteers also give back to their local community by conducting awareness-raising presentations on advance care planning. Other volunteer involvement includes participating in educational webinars, acting on advisory committees and other opportunities that arise.

I don’t have a background in health care. Is that a requirement?
While some of our volunteers have a background in health care, it’s not a requirement for the role. Our volunteers bring a range of valuable skills and professional experience from diverse sectors.  Having an interest in health, people and advance care planning is important, as are skills such as effective communication, listening, a desire to help others and an ability to grasp new information.

What training and support is provided?
ACPA offers comprehensive training to successful applicants to ensure they are well supported in their role. While some of the training is delivered online, successful applicants will need to be available for on-site training at Austin Health (approx. seven days). Our volunteer training program is planned for July.

Volunteers also have the ongoing support of our dedicated advisory service team and the broader ACPA team.

Are there social opportunities for volunteers?
Our volunteers enjoy informal ‘get togethers’ to provide support to each other and share learnings. There are also regular catch-ups for training and other events at Austin Health.
