Cooking for a cause - corporate volunteering

FareShare’s mission is simple. We rescue food that would otherwise go to waste and cook it into free, nutritious meals for people in crisis. Our vision is for a society where food is not wasted and no one goes hungry.

We started in Melbourne, where we now cook 1.2 million meals a year in our kitchen for those seeking food assistance. We are about to open the doors to our second, and Australia's largest, charity kitchen in Brisbane, where surplus food is available and community need is acute.

Our expansion into Brisbane is made possible by a strategic collaboration with Foodbank Queensland. The partnership plays to both organisations’ strengths. FBQ will source and supply raw ingredients into our kitchens and oversee the direct distribution of cooked meals to Queensland charities. FareShare will focus on our unique capability – high volume cooking of surplus food.

Corporate volunteering in our kitchen

FareShare relies on a community of regular volunteers to help prepare our meals. To promote community connectedness and improve understanding about food waste and hunger, FareShare also offers one-off volunteer shifts to businesses and community groups.

This team-building experience creates a powerful opportunity to enhance culture, while making a very tangible contribution to vulnerable people. The popular program was developed in Melbourne where around 3000 corporate volunteers lend a hand each year. Companies who regularly volunteer with us include AGL, nab, Woolworths, Nissan, Westpac and Clayton Utz.

Under the guidance of experienced chefs, each team of corporate volunteers works together to cook more than 1000 nutritious meals for people who may otherwise go without. They leave our kitchen with the satisfaction of having made a meaningful contribution to the community and those in need.

Financial contribution
FareShare requires a financial contribution to cover the cost of providing your volunteering experience. This contribution forms a significant part of FareShare’s modest income. We do not receive any ongoing government funding and as a charity we have to raise all of the money required to keep our freezers and cool rooms cold, our ovens hot and to pay our chefs and staff.

The cost is $750+ GST for a group of 10-16. For groups of 17 and over, the cost is $50 per head per shift. For groups of nine or less, please call the office to discuss.

Meeting facilities
FareShare has an attractive multi-purpose meeting/function room, overlooking the kitchens, which is available for private bookings. The room seats up to 80 people, with phone conferencing, AV, presentation screen and internet facilities. We also provide catering services or are happy for you to provide your own.
