Jannawi Connections
Safer Children, Stronger Families, Stronger Communities.
Jannawi has helped hundreds of children in the Canterbury and Bankstown areas for nearly 40 years. Sadly, child abuse is becoming more and more prevalent across the nation. This is a significant problem – during 2012-2013, there were 184,216 Australian children suspected of being harmed or at risk of harm from abuse and/or neglect, which was an increase of 7.9% from the previous year.

Our primary purpose is to protect children who have experienced trauma through violence, neglect, physical, psychological or sexual abuse. Sadly this is usually by someone they know, trust or love.

Many families we work with have experienced or are still experiencing domestic violence.
Families like Nina’s:
Nina was taken into care as she was doing badly at school and lived in a violent household. We worked with Nina and her mum – who had had a traumatic childhood filled with abuse – and they were able to leave the abusive relationship and move to a new home. We helped them to re-build a trusting relationship and taught Nina that her mum was there to protect her and they now have a happy relationship and Nina is doing well in school.

Jannawi's intensive program can have contact with a family 3 or more times a week and usually is involved with children & families fIn recent years we have worked with around 60 children a year and provided a range of services that usually requires the involvement of many agencies. The Jannawi model works well for families with complex issues & needs as they only need to relate to one agency for support. It works well for children because the intensity of service provision promotes increased safety, provides opportunities for growth & development and provides meaningful information for the purpose of assessment.

We want help for Jannawi to provide these services to more families in urgent need. Like the mother of three children under five years of age escaping domestic violence from her husband who had thrown their baby against the wall that couldn't be helped because Jannawi's current premises in Lakemba, and staff and program resources are at capacity. We require additional premises, skilled staffing resources and equipment and supplies to expand our services and help the vulnerable in new geographical areas, like one woman who had experienced sexual assault and had her three children kidnapped by their violent father. She was trying to get them back - we couldn't help her because she was outside our immediate area.

While Jannawi will receive a small amount of funding from Government, we have identified critical services and facilities that this will not cover. Our charity,Jannawi Connections has a mission to raise the funds and awareness to make this happen
