Most children with disabilities in Sri Lanka come from single
parent households (as the father often sadly
leaves the family when a disabled child is born), thus forcing the mother to
offer her services as a low skilled labourer, care for her child with a
disability and generate an income for the rest of the family as the sole breadwinner.
Most mothers who are not sufficiently skilled or trained to generate a
household income and support their families are forced to seek the assistance of their aged parents or family members. Maternal grandparents and extended families provide valuable support to such mothers but also need an income to take on additional responsibilities. This added burden places more financial stress on families. We have initiated a Family Assistance Program (FAP) to assist such families and would deeply appreciate your generous donations to help support these unfortunate families.
