Around the Bay 2017
Event
“We thought about pulling the plug but our students were begging to continue. They said, ‘We just want to get it done.’ It was the best feeling for them to go over the finish line…”- Jenna, Sports Teacher, Dandenong High School.

Around the Bay 2016 was held under the most difficult conditions in the events 25 year history.
It was hard enough for the adults on Team IAG, but imagine riding into strong winds as a 14 year old, first time bike rider! You’d think they’d give up…

But amidst the significant challenge, students from Dandenong High School showed their true character, refusing offers to pull out and jump into a support car and pressing on to the finish line.

However, when you consider that many of these children are from disadvantaged backgrounds and supported by The Smith Family, cycling into a headwind is, metaphorically what they do every day.

This resilience and determination are foundational to personal and social confidence.

At IAG we believe ‘You can be confident about the future because we’re helping make your world a safer place’.  We use our strength, scale and expertise to help make you safer at work, on the road and in your home. We are committed to making our communities safer, stronger and more confident.

Today, 1 in 7 Australian children are living in disadvantage, where even the basics are hard to come by. This means they miss out on essentials such as a complete uniform, proper school shoes or even the right school books to make the most of their education.

As these children get older, they have fewer role models, and access to mentors and networks that are critical for creating educational opportunities to help them build their aspirations and be motivated to learn.

Confident futures should not be reserved just for the wealthy. It is our promise to help break the cycle of long term disadvantage and truly make the world a safer place.

So IAG is teaming up with the Dandenong High School students and coming back to ride Around the Bay 2017.

Not only will we get an insight into the challenges these face in the classroom but we’ll also be kept up to date with their training progress and even get to meet them on the day!

In 2017, IAG employees our target is to raise enough money to support 120 children in need with their education (thats around $70,000). This life changing support will ensure primary students will receive a Learning for Life Scholarship to help them succeed at school.

Its not just for hardcore cyclist either- distances start at a family friendly 25km!

Together we want to build a team of 50 passionate IAG employees to join the Around The Bay Challenge and raise $576 each for The Smith Family. Plus all donations are matched dollar for dollar by the IAG Foundation!
