Salvation Army - Overnight Hamodava Café Volunteer
Program Summary: The Overnight Hamodava Café will build upon the existing Daytime Hamodava Café operation to provide a welcoming, safe and inclusive place for men and women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the City of Melbourne.Based at 69 Bourke Street Melbourne, the space will be open from 11pm-7am, 7 nights a week and will be staffed by 2 trained Salvation Army staff and supported by a team of 3-5 volunteers each night.
The team of staff and volunteers will provide tea, coffee and toasted sandwiches and support to people from all walks of life, especially those living on the margins of society. The overnight Hamodava Cafe’s primary purpose is about building relationships with people and developing a strong sense of belonging and acceptance for all and will ensure that during the winter months there is a safe place for people to go late at night.
The program is aimed at homeless people, men and women, who self-refer as well as those identified by emergency services personnel, outreach programs operated the Salvation Army Melbourne and other community agencies, Police, Metro Train Authorised officers, Protective Service Officers (PSO) and CBD businesses.
Tasks:
- Assist in making the Hamodava Café a warm and welcoming place by chatting to those who walk through it’s doors;
- Taking café orders, preparing and serving food and beverages to Melbourne’s homeless and disadvantaged community;
- Engaging in recreational activities such as board games and table tennis with attendees;
- Work with the trained Salvation Army staff to engage with and offer both support and referrals for a range of people, including those experiencing homelessness, those who are alcohol and/or drug affected and underage young people needing support.
