Tasmanian Devils are facing extinction in the wild due to a devastating contagious cancer known as Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD). This disease is rapidly and easily spread through scratching and biting, which is part of Tasmanian Devil’s natural behaviour when eating. Once contracted, Tasmanian Devils will normally die a painful death within six months.
At Taronga, we are working hard to help save this iconic Australian species by breeding an insurance population of healthy, cancer-free devils. To do this, we need to match up genetically diverse devils that will make the best pair, and the strongest offspring. Like a dating service!
