Simple things save lives

Stella lives in rural Papua New Guinea, three hours’ walk from the closest medical clinic. She has suffered unimaginable pain.

Stella has faced the reality of childbirth not once or twice, but seven times. Tragically, four of her babies did not survive birth.

Her babies, like so many others in Papua New Guinea, died because of birth complications that could have been prevented.

Stella’s third labour stretched over two gruelling days and nights. By the time the baby arrived, Stella was unconscious. When she awoke, her son was handed to her, unmoving. The umbilical cord had been wrapped around the child’s neck and he could not be saved.

Unfortunately, life-threatening birth complications frequently arise in rural villages of Papua New Guinea. Newborns suffer from being born too soon, too small, or with an umbilical cord around their neck. Mothers often experience haemorrhaging – the number one cause of maternal death in the country – or a retained placenta, which can lead to severe infections.
