National Volunteer Peer Coordinator

Are you interested in gaining experience within a Not for profit organisation and helping develop a program for peers with a lived experience of addiction? SMART Recovery Australia is looking for a volunteer extraordinaire. We are looking for someone to take a volunteer position within our national organisation as a National peer coordinator. You will support the development of our peer program that supports peers across Australia.   What is SMART Recovery? SMART Recovery is a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing based program for people dealing with problematic behaviour around addictions. SMART Recovery groups are evidence based that support self-management of problematic behaviours such as alcohol, drugs, gambling and other addictions. It is delivered in a mutual aid group setting. SMART Recovery groups are facilitated by both professionals and peers (people recovering from addictive behaviours).  Who is SMART Recovery Australia? The organisation is a company limited by guarantee and registered as a health promotion charity. The vision of SMART Recovery Australia is to make SMART Recovery accessible to all people in Australia. Our purpose is to empower Australians with practical skills, tools and support to manage addictive behaviours. SMART Recovery Australia aims to help people help each other to manage their addictive behaviours for the improvement of health and social well-being in the community.  SMART Recovery Australia coordinates over 230 SMART Recovery groups face-to-face and online throughout Australia and New Zealand and is growing rapidly. The number of groups have doubled in the last two years.
What will my Duties be? 
  • Mostly work from home
  • Support National coordinator in running of peer program (‘peer’ is someone with a lived experience of addiction)
  • Coordinate support structures primarily for Peers and also volunteers within SRAU
  • Attend teleconference staff meetings (on occasions)
  • Attend face to face meetings with National Coordinator (on occasions)
  • Attend events in Sydney (on occasions)
 What are the requirements for role? Essential- 
  • Passionate about helping people to make changes
  • Excellent customer service
  • Solid administration skills and good standard of office technology
  • =Assertive and compassionate communication skills
  • Optimistic ‘can do’ attitude
  • Willing to work autonomously (due to nature of role there will be limited face to face contact with other SRAU staff)
  • Access to internet and computer (SRAU may support internet costs)
 Desirable- 
  • Lived experience of addiction (not essential)
  • Experience working in a Not for profit
  • Experience in a support or supervisory role
will provide-

  • On-going supervisory support from SRAU National Coordinator.
  • Free attendance to a 2-day SMART Recovery facilitator training course.
  • Expenses reimbursement – phone costs, travel etc.
  • Possible opportunities to travel interstate on occasion to attend staff events (Paid by SRAU).
 What is the commitment expected? 
  • Up to 16 hours per week (flexible)
  • Committed to a minimum of 12 months in role
