Tasmanian Devils are facing extinction in the wild due to a devastating contagious cancer called Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD). This disease is easily and rapidly spread through scratching & biting, which is part of Devil’s natural behaviour when eating and once contracted Devil’s will normally die a painful death within six months.
At Taronga, we are working hard to help save this iconic Australian species by breeding an insurance population of healthy, cancer-free devils. To do this, we need to match up genetically diverse devils that will make the best pair, and the strongest offspring. Like a dating service!
