IDAHOBIT Day 2017 - Lendlease Appeal
Page
This IDAHOBIT Day, join Lendlease in supporting Twenty10 incorporating GLCS NSW, a Sydney-based organisation that works with people of diverse genders, sexualities, and/or intersex variations.

Why should we donate?
To explain, we need to introduce you to Kai (name changed for anonymity).

Kai is 19 and identifies as a transgender man (he was assigned the sex of female at birth but identifies and lives as a man). He is from a cultural and linguistically diverse background.

In his final year at high school, Kai’s parents refused to support him during his transition and kicked him out of the house.

Kai spent a few months couch surfing or staying in hostels before he heard about Twenty10 during a web chat with QLife.

Kai often spent time in Twenty10’s busy yet unfunded Drop In centre. Run entirely on fundraised and donated money, Kai could get something healthy to eat, have a shower and wash his clothes. He was able to attend the free Health Clinic, get free legal advice and get casual support to help navigate Centrelink and Medicare.

Twenty10 staff helped Kai to move into one our our medium term housing units.

Thanks to the generous donations of our supporters, Twenty10 was able to help set Kai up and make the empty unit into a home.

During his time in the unit, Kai has been supported to develop a range of living skills including budgeting, grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning. He has completed his HSC and has even saved money for a deposit for a rental property.

Kai has made a great group of supportive friends including some of his neighbours during his time in the unit and at Twenty10. When Kai moves out from the unit next year, the furnishings and homewares, the life skills and savings will move with him, helping to establish a solid foundation for his future.

What is IDAHOBIT Day?
Started in 2005 as the International Day Against Homophobia, IDAHOBIT Day has evolved to include transphobiabiphobia and intersexphobia

Homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and intersexphobia are a serious problem for people of diverse genders, sexualities, and/or intersex variations. Research has shown:
  • Almost two-thirds of young LGBTIQA+ people surveyed experienced some form of homophobia and/or transphobia (source 1source 2)
  • 41% of young LGBTIQA+ people surveyed had thought of self-harm or suicide (source)
  • Over 90% of young LGBTIQA+ people surveyed who had experienced physical homophobic or transphobic abuse had thought about suicide in response to their experience (source)
